The Guatemala City airport was a place of chaos and mystique in my mind as the airplane ascended out of Mexico City. It was one of those days when it´s difficult to comprehend that some slabs of metal have been meticulously bolted together and filled with ambient furnishings to propel humans 30,000 feet above the ground and transport them rapidly around the world. Looking out the window at the cloud layer, it seemed impossible that we could be that high and still alive. It was like I was experiencing it all for the first time. But those new eyes also looked down upon the lush green mountains of Guatemala through the little window and assured me that I would find some adventure among them. Maneuvering through the airport in Guatemala City was much like getting out of bed and finding the way to the bathroom at home.

Antigua is all that everyone describes it to be. The streets are filled with beautiful Colonial architecture, inviting cafes in peaceful courtyards and a multitude of ways to spend your US dollars. The first night here, I landed at an inexpensive little hostel that included a cafe and plenty of ¨ambiance¨ as well. The people were incredibly welcoming, despite the run down feeling of the place, the cats fighting on the tin roof above my head in the middle of the night, and my mistake of taking a room next to the shared bathroom. Tonight I have upgraded so that I can rest up before the journey to Lake Atitlan tomorrow where I will begin Spanish school. Nothing is more apparent than my need for those classes and I find myself very grateful for what little I know of the language already.

Much more to come once I´m acclimated! For now, I must get back before my curfew... darkness.
